In this process, the stored energy of a capacitor bank is discharged in an extremely short time (1-3 ms) via the ignition tip of the welding element. Additional aids such as inert gas or ceramic ring are not required.
All threads and stud flanges are designed according to DIN EN ISO 13918. The flange is part of the welding stud and its diameter is larger than the outer diameter of the stud. During welding it prevents the arc from spreading to the cylindrical part of the stud and at the same time increases the welding surface.
In practice, two different welding methods are used:
- Capacitor discharge stud welding with tip ignition
- Drawn arc stud welding with the subgroup short cycle stud welding
